Upshur County Students Get a Visit From Rare Owls Thanks to STEM Grant

Posted: Updated:

Gifted program students from Upshur County got a closer look at some rare owls on Wednesday.

The students have been learning about the food chain, and specifically about owls, for three months.

"Raptors Up Close," from Berkeley Springs, brought 10 different owls to a presentation at Union Elementary.

A Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) grant from FirstEnergy allowed this project to be funded.

Project coordinators said the kids were excited to see the special birds.

"The kids have been ecstatic, they've been excited. They've looked forward to this day for about two months now. So to have this opportunity they feel like it's a once in a lifetime experience," said Gabrielle Rhodes, an Upshur County gifted teacher.

Students also learned what type of prey owls eat and made nesting boxes for the owls.
