Vice President,
Calfee Funeral Home
Beckley, 34

Jon Calfee is the fifth generation in his family to work at Calfee Funeral Home.

Serving as the vice president of the Beckley funeral home, Calfee, 34, said the best part about his job is helping people in their greatest time of need.

"Meeting with families has to be my favorite part of my job," he said. "We try to help them the best we can. When it's over and they come to you and say how much they appreciated everything you did and thank you for your help, it really means a lot."

The family-run funeral home has been in business for 113 years. Calfee said following in his father's and grandfather's footsteps was always in the back of his mind.

"It wasn't until being out of school that I knew this was my calling," Calfee said, noting he has worked at the funeral home for 12 to 13 years. "It's really been a blur since then."

Calfee said his job is always on the back of his mind, whether he is planning for the service the next day or thinking about the parking lot layout, he wants to make sure everything happens smoothly.

And sometimes, his job can be stressful.

"It is really hard. You never know when the phone rings and when you're going to be called out," he said.

However, Calfee said he enjoys what he does and says that hard work really does pay off.

"I would tell people to continue to work hard. Set your goals and do whatever you can to make sure you reach those goals and be happy."

And he hopes he can continue to carry on his family legacy. However, he says he won't pressure his two children to take on the family business.

"I'm very proud and I think about that constantly. My grandfather was here with me. He passed away in 2008. Since then, my dad and I have been running the company. It's something I would love to continue for many years."
