Jeff Miller

Branch Manager,
First Community Bank
Beckley, 30

Jeff Miller says school wasn't necessarily his thing, but now he's comfortable and successful in his current position where real-life experience, education and family have combined.

"What will probably separate me from some of the other folks is that I was scholastically probably one of the less stellar nominations ever for 40 under 40," Miller jokes. "… I've got a lot of great stories though, if that counts for anything."

Miller is currently the branch manager of First Community Bank in Beckley. After completing Woodrow Wilson High School, he went to Concord University. When he was done there, he took a break from school for a year or two.

"I have a great family, a wonderful supportive family and my parents both were very successful in their industries," Miller said. "I was a bit of a slacker. It took me some time to really figure out what I wanted to do. It took me having some crappy jobs to realize that an education is the key to being successful. … At that point in my life I realized I needed to get my life together and do something."

Miller then picked up a bachelor's degree in business administration with a focus on finance from Mountain State University. He hoped to land in banking, a sector he thought would be good fit after watching his father, an accountant at a large coal company, and his mother, a successful businesswoman in real estate.

Miller got his start at First Community Bank in 2007.

"I did that for about a year and they kind of put me in different positions through the branch," Miller said.

He then had an opportunity as a commercial lender and various other positions, including being a debt collector for a short time. That position, he said, wasn't much fun.

He said his real world experience and "street smarts" have taught him how to interact and communicate with people while conveying important financial information.

While he is a golfer and fisherman, he said he doesn't get to do much of that anymore. Instead, he spends time with his wife of four years, Tiffany, and his daughter, Clara, who is just a few months old.
