Study: Morgantown expensive for home buyers

Posted: Updated:

MORGANTOWN, WV (AP) — New research suggests the cost of living in Morgantown was 2.7 percent higher than the national average in January.

That's according to a survey by the West Virginia University Bureau of Business and Economic Research.

It found that in Morgantown, housing prices were 13.8 percent higher than the rest of the U.S., while other cost of living categories such as health care were below the national average.

Economist Eric Bowen says the cost of a home in Morgantown is higher than many other college towns, including Cincinnati, Columbus, Pittsburgh, Knoxville, Tenn., and Lexington, Ky.

But the city was several percentage points lower when it came to groceries, utilities and health care prices.

Bowen says data show housing costs have been rising since 2006.
