JACKSON'S MILL -

While many high school students enjoy their time off, others are busy governing a new state.

The American Legion's annual Boys' State program is underway this week in Jackson's Mill.

Boys in the program will elect a governor, secretary of state, and other positions as they learn about leadership and government.

Organizers said they want the students to learn lessons they can apply wherever life leads them.

"We hope to give them the tools, that whether they decide to be political leaders, community leaders, business leaders, whatever, that they will understand that their voice is important, they make a difference, and if they something that needs to be changed, they know how to change it," said Steve Sluss, Boys State political coordinator.

The camp ends this Saturday.
