The Fairmont Senior boys basketball team was very close to a State Championship a few months back.
The only team in their way was Bluefield.
However, the Polar Bears are trying to build off their successful year, back inside the gym hard at work once again.
The summer practice period check-in brought us back to the Friendly City to follow up with the boys from Fairmont Senior.
The 2012-2013 season was a memorable one, but next year the expectations will be even higher. The Polar Bears lose All-State performer Travon Horton, along with a very reliable big man in Shaquille Washington. But All-State point guard Jarin Hilson returns, as well as Devonte Waites and other valuable pieces.
Head Coach David Retton said his team remembers that Championship loss. But also admits a roster full of fresh faces can only mean a bright future is ahead.
"It's great to see young faces. It's great to see kids energetic to learn, willing to learn. These kids have been outstanding. I got here at about 7:35 a.m. and there were about five or six kids waiting at the door and waiting for practice. That's exciting," Retton said.
