Annual Aviation Summer Camp Held in Morgantown

Posted: Updated:

Some West Virginia teen are getting an "out of this world" experience this week at Space Camp.

More than 40 eighth graders from 22 West Virginia counties are in Morgantown for the fifth annual Aviation Summer Camp.

Students will spend the next few days playing with flight simulators, learning about rockets and even speaking with a real astronaut.

"Hopefully they can see that science is fun, and see that there are jobs in West Virginia, and in the nation, in science related fields. Hopefully they'll gain interest in pursuing something like this in their higher education," said Candy Cordwell, of the NASA WV Space Grant Consortium.

Friday at 1:30 p.m., West Virginia's only astronaut Jon McBride will speak to the campers at the mineral resources building. That event is free and open to the public.
