Hillbilly Hardball Classic Continues to Flourish in 23rd Annual Tournament

BRIDGEPORT -

More than 30 Legion Baseball Teams from around the region are squaring off in the 23rd annual Hillbilly Hardball Classic.

The annual tournament is hosted by Elkins Post 29 Baseball. Games are being played at fields in Elkins, Bridgeport, Philippi, Mill Creek and Tennerton.

Games were originally scheduled to begin on Thursday, but strong storms canceled the opening day festivities. Grounds crews worked relentlessly in order to make the fields playable on Friday.

"Last night we put a drag on it until about 8:30 just to turn it over and let the evening air just dry it up a little bit," Bridgeport Head Baseball Coach Robert Shields said. "Then this morning we drug it again and right now it's completely dry. It looks really good."

Because games were rained out on Thursday, the tournament will play Thursday's games on Sunday and forgo the championship round.
