WVU Women's Basketball Team Hosts Summer Basketball Camp

Posted: Updated:

There are thousands of great basketball players out there and they all had to get their start somewhere. Maybe even at a program like WVU women's basketball summer camp. The camp is for kindergarten through fifth grade girls and 5 and 6-year-old boys.

Eli Henderson brought his son to learn basic fundamentals of basketball.

"I think it's a good thing, number one to get him out of the house in the summertime, and it's a good time to get him to learn some fundamentals," Henderson said. "Anything that he can use to help himself, I'm all about it."

Toni Oliverio is the director of Operations for the Women's Basketball team. She said players come out to teach basic fundamentals like dribbling, passing and defense.

The camp is also to let the kids have fun while playing the game

"If anything we hope they get an even bigger love for basketball and love for Mountaineer basketball," Oliverio said. "And come back during the season and join Carey's Crew and just become a fan of the team."

Head Coach Mike Carey was also there to help out with the camp. He said it's a great way to earn some new Mountaineer fans.

"You know they love to be around our players," Carey said. "And then when they come to the game they can identify a little bit more and say hey they coached me and that type of stuff. Our players do a great job and this is a great camp for young kids."

Kids that participate leave with a camp T-shirt and an official camp ball. They also get the chance to play on the court where the WVU Men and Women's Basketball teams play.

"To be honest I think that practice facility is a huge thing," Henderson said. "And it gives the chance for him to mingle with some of the players and to have fun with his friends."

This age group isn't the only camp WVU Women's Basketball is hosting this summer. If you like to know more or even sign up call the Women's Basketball Office at 304-293-3508.
