West Virginia's largest AmeriCorps program celebrated 20 years of existence Monday evening in Morgantown.

Energy Express is a six-week summer program that offers reading and nutrition to underprivileged children across the state.

Five hundred college students took the AmeriCorps pledge of service and will spend two months helping children in this proven program.

"One of the really exciting things about the program is that children who participate in the six week program gain about two to four months on average in literacy skill," said Alicia Cassels, WVU Extension Specialist.

Cassels said the federal AmeriCorps program has decided to continue funding Energy Express for another three years.
