Marion County Sesquicentennial Celebrations Begin June 20

Posted: Updated:

The Marion County Historical Society has prepared for West Virginia's 150th birthday for months.

Displays have been set up in the Marion County Historical Museum that focus on the state's past and the Civil War.

One person even sent in some rare items, including old newspaper articles about West Virginia's statehood and a handwritten letter from the state's first governor, Arthur I. Boreman.

"There are all the articles, the Wheeling conferences, and the original constitution. All of these original documents between 1861 and 1865. I couldn't even begin to place a value on them. They are very, very rare and very, very expensive," said Dora Kaygrubb, of the Marion County Historical Society.

The Marion County Historical Museum will open at 10 a.m. on Thursday, June 20.

Sesquicentennial activities will take place throughout the county all day long.
