SIU Responds to Nursing Board's Decision to Withdraw Approval

Posted: Updated:

Salem International University has responded to the West Virginia Board of Examiners for Registered Professional Nurses' decision to withdraw its approval of the School of Nursing Associate Degree program in a letter.

SIU President John Luotto requested that the board hold a special meeting to reconsider their position, citing that the board misunderstood the university's actions, according to a June 19 letter from SIU. The board and SIU personnel held a meeting on June 12 where President Luotto said the board voted unanimously to continue the provisional approval of the SIU Nursing Program. Luotto learned the following day that after he left the meeting, the board went into executive session and the vote was reversed, resulting in the revocation of the approval of the University's Associate of Science Degree in Nursing.

Luotto said the board's sudden reversal seemed to have been based on a casual conversation between Dr. Wilson and Dr. Robin Lewis, Associate Director of the Board, which created a misunderstanding.

SIU maintains that it has complied with the directives highlighted in the February 25 letter from the board. "There is nothing more important to me right now than the peace and welfare of our students," Luotto said.

A meeting date between the board and SIU has not been set.
