UPDATE: Man Declared Dead After Drowning in Cheat Lake

UPDATE:

The West Virginia State Police Department said Martin L. Hansen, 20, of Denmark, has died after drowning in Cheat Lake Friday afternoon.

Hansen was swimming with friends when he suddenly submerged twice and then failed to re-emerged, according to a press release from state police.

The victim was initially unable to be located, according to state police, but he was later recovered by the Morgantown Police Department's dive unit.

Witnesses described the scene as "pure panic."

"Three people made it to the rock. The fourth guy jumped in later, he made it about halfway across, and never surfaced," said Christian Lanham of Morgantown. "There was a bunch of us here on the rock, we called 911...that's the only thing you can do."

"Everybody was just hanging out, enjoying the first day of summer," said Grayson Brady of Fairmont. "Then, he went under and never came back up."

Monongalia County authorities responded to a report of a drowning near Morgans Run Road around 2:30 p.m. June 21.

First responders rescued a man from Cheat Lake before 4:30 p.m.

The man is believed to be in his early 20s.  He was transported by Monongalia County EMS to Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, according to West Virginia State Police.  His identity and condition are unknown at this time.

West Virginia State Police are investigating.  The Morgantown Dive Team and the DNR Police also responded to the scene.
