New Vision Renewable Energy Shines a Brighter Future Overseas

PHILIPPI -

New Vision Renewable Energy in Barbour County uses everyday objects like political signs to light a brighter future for people in countries like Kenya.

New Vision volunteers build everything from solar panels, to water purifiers, but on Monday the group built solar powered lights.

"We get long strips of LED lights; we cut them into small sections, we solder new leads onto them. When you're all done you have a lightweight and durable light. The solar panels and the battery itself will give the family an average between five and seven hours of lighting every night," said Ruston Seaman, president of New Vision Renewable Energy.

The group allows young volunteers to help and learn more about helping others, and renewable energy.

"We're just trying to educate young people particularly hands on and involved with what renewable energy is. We're educating our young people also about the world in which we live and everyone is involved with helping out to make lights," said Seaman.

New Vision will send 200 handmade solar lights to Kenya. Seaman said the people there need the light for different reasons.

"A lot of them are using Kerosene every evening, which has a lot of fumes and it's not good for your eyes. The best way to improve education in the world is to give kids a light so they can study at nighttime after they've been at school," said Seaman.

Making the lights and learning about the world makes the volunteers feel lucky.

"We learn how important it is to help the world and not just us in America. We're very fortunate to have such amazing things like light. I love helping people to brighten up our world a little bit," said Cadie McNaboe, a New Vision Renewable Energy volunteer.

New Vision will be making the solar powered lights every Monday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at its location in Philippi.
