Construction For New Digital Mammography Machine Begins At Fairmont General

Posted: Updated:

Construction is underway at Fairmont General Hospital.

A new digital mammography machine will be up and running in the coming weeks.

The Fairmont General Hospital Foundation spent nearly two years raising more than $500,000 for the machine.

Hospital employees said it will be an important tool for the county, which has a higher death rate from breast cancer than the national average.

"Digital mammography has become a standard of care nationally," said Dr. John Leon, Fairmont General Hospital. "Most hospitals have them. There has been an adoption process over the last five years."

"It's a big milestone for us and we are very pleased," said Robert Marquardt, Fairmont General Hospital President. "I think the ability for us to offer state of the art technology to our patients is really rewarding."

The first patient has been scheduled and the machine should be up and running by July 22.
