Restaurant Road Trip: Beck's Cafe

SHINNSTON -

The Shinnston Sports Complex has brought in billiards players for years, but nearly a year ago, the complex got a face lift and welcomed a brand new cafe, Beck's Cafe.

The cafe features breakfast and lunch items and is already making a name for itself.

"We decided to open it up and put the café in the front. We sell breakfast items, lunch items. Great Hoagies," said Becky Minor, manager at Beck's Café.

No frills, just good food. What you see is what you get. And if you ask the regulars, that's exactly what makes this place so great.

"You can just stop in. You don't have to be dressed up. You just stop in. We stop after work. You know," said Pat Post, a regular at Beck's Cafe.

The term "regular" is a bit of an understatement when describing customers at Beck's. Lou Belcastro stops in several times a week, sometimes even multiple times in a single day.

He said he enjoys the atmosphere and the company that greets him.

"Other restaurants are alright, but right here it's just like family. And if someone comes here we could talk all day and they don't rush you out. Again, I'm telling you, just a nice relaxing spot," Belcastro said.

Customers agreed, the staff is friendly and the prices are unbeatable, but the real reason they come back time and time again, is the food.

"The food is great, you could spend all day here," Belcastro said.

The cafe serves up a variety of sandwiches for breakfast and lunch, but the biggest movers on the menu are the croissants, especially the chicken salad croissant that Minor gets credit for whipping up.

"Bacon, egg and cheese croissant in the morning. That with a cappuccino is wonderful," Post said.

"I like the chicken salad on a croissant. It's very good. I like the steak hoagie," Belcastro said.

Post and Belcastro agreed that one of their favorite items on the menu is an item you won't find on the menu in the summer. They both raved about the homemade soups that Minor makes herself.

"During the winter months they make the best soup here, the broccoli cheese soup, the stuffed pepper soup, and there's a ton of vegetables in their soup. Very, very good," Belcastro said.

Minor said Shinnston needs a place like Beck's, a place where people can round up some friends and play a game of pool, or stop in and grab a bite to eat.

"Stop in and get a cup of coffee. Have a cookie or a scone or something like that," Minor said.

Beck's is located at 315 Pike Street in Shinnston. For more information, call (304) 592-2637.
