Firefighter Camp Shows Campers Different Sides Of Fire Service

Posted: Updated:

Young firefighters were hard at work in Lewis County Wednesday.

The West Virginia University Fire Service Extension is continuing its annual Junior Firefighters camp this week.

Participants were learning how to deal with many different kinds of emergency situations, including water rescue and hazmat response.

Organizers said exposing the campers to all these possibilities gives them a better idea of the demands on a fire department.

"This just teaches that the fire service is multi-faceted, and lets them kind of understand what the differences of our jobs are and what the importance of those jobs may be," said Mark Doty, program director for the Fire Service Extension.

The camp wraps up for the year on Thursday.
