WV sheriff's secretary accused of stealing

FAYETTEVILLE, W.Va. (AP) — A Fayette County Sheriff's Department secretary has been charged with stealing more than $30,000 from her office.

Sheriff Steve Kessler says 42-year-old Cheryl Lynn Gray of Oak Hill was charged Friday with embezzlement, falsifying accounts and two counts of forgery Friday.

Media outlets report detectives discovered the money missing from the department's front office. Kessler says the money had been taken from an account used to collect payments for concealed weapons permits.

Kessler says Gray allegedly submitted fake receipts and reports to the sheriff's tax office in the past several months.

Gray was arraigned in Fayette County Magistrate Court and released on $2,500 bond. Kessler says she has been fired from her job.

It wasn't immediately known whether Gray has an attorney. She didn't have a listed telephone number.
