A man died after a tractor trailer hit him on a Preston County road early Tuesday morning.

It happened close to 4:30 a.m. on Route 26 near the entrance to Preston High School.

A 2006 Peterbilt tractor trailer pulling a trailer loaded with lumber encountered a man, identified as Christopher Totten, 39 of Lorain, Ohio, laying on the roadway. The driver of the tractor trailer, Harry Whetsell Jr., 58 of Addison, Pa., attempted to avoid hitting Totten but was unable to, according to the Preston County Sheriff's Office.

Totten died on scene as a result of injuries sustained in the accident, according to the sheriff's office.
