Elkins City Council Approves First Reading of Trash Collection Rates Ordinance

ELKINS -

The Elkins City Council has approved the first reading of an ordinance to increase its trash collection rates.

The nearly $6 increase would set rates for residents at almost $26 a month.

Commercial collections without a dumpster would be more than $41 a month.

The city would use the proceeds from the rate hike to finish closing and cover maintenance costs at the Elkins Landfill.

"We still have ongoing commitments there to the DEP to maintain that thing, take care of the leachate and start working on a closure plan. So in order to that in order to fund that operation the best way we could come up with is to just increase the rates on sanitation," said Bob Pingley, operations manager.

The city closed the landfill in 2011. Pingley said there are no plans to reopen it.

A second reading and passage of the ordinance is set for Thursday, July 18.
