Restaurant Road Trip: Atomic Grill

Posted: Updated:

It's only been open for about two weeks now, but the Atomic Grill is already making a name for itself, filling the space left by the closure of the old Hostess Bakery, a local landmark in its time. But the owners said their focus on the local community goes a lot deeper than that.

"The restaurant specializes in having local, home-grown produce and meats. So everything we've got is really fresh. We're locavores, we're trying to buy from the local economy trying to get everything fresh to people because we think that's healthier," said Michael McCawley, who opened the restaurant with his son, Dan McCawley.

That's a code they live by. There are no freezers in the entire place, only one walk-in cooler. It's named Christopher. And while the restaurant's staff members have plenty of fun, they also want to kick food in the area up to another level.

"Take a casual approach to slightly elevated food. It's a family-friendly place, but you can still get a very nice cut of steak and some rather awesome barbecue," said Dan McCawley.

But don't take the McCawley's word for it, their customers will say it themselves. Angel Oliverio lives in Pittsburgh, and she said the Atomic Grill can beat out most restaurants near her.

"Absolutely fantastic. The flavors were amazing. We had the pulled pork sliders to start, ridiculous. Super-juicy, it was awesome, everything, the ribs were fantastic," Oliverio said.

The Atomic Grill is located on Green Bag Road in Morgantown and is open daily from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. and until 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. For more information, check out their Facebook page here.
