July 5 is one of the busiest days of the year for humane societies and it's no different in Marion County.

While we may find the loud cracks and booms of fireworks exciting, they can frighten pets and cause them to run away.

The Marion County Humane Society said it already has received several calls from people who are searching for their pets.

Employees said there are several ways to keep this from happening to you.

"Make sure you keep your dog inside during fireworks. They have these things out called thunder shirts for anxiety. If it's really bad, you court talk to your vet about some kind of medication for fireworks season," Amanda Allenby, of the Marion County Humane Society.

The Humane Society said if your pet does run away to contact animal control.
