Drug cases surge in Lewis County

Posted: Updated:

WESTON, WV (AP) — Lewis County prosecutor Mike Smith says drug cases in the county have surged from 15 in all of 2012 to 95 through mid-2013.

Smith tells The Exponent Telegram that he has moved one of his two part-time assistants to full time to help with the increased workload.

He says most of the cases involve felony drug charges.

Sheriff Adam Gissy attributes the increase to a team effort by all police agencies and the courts in the county.

Lewis County Commission President Pat Boyle says the commission set aside twice the amount of money it normally does for regional jail costs to keep drug offenders off the streets.
