CLARKSBURG -

Clarksburg Police Chief Marshall Goff resigned on Monday, City Mayor Cathy Goings confirmed. According to Goings, Goff said it was a "family decision."

Clarksburg City Manager Martin Howe announced the new interim Clarksburg Police Chief as Lt. Robert Hilliard Tuesday. Deputy Chief Chamberlain will remain in his currently roll. Together, Hilliard and Chamberlain have over 43 years of combined service, according to a press release from Howe's office. Howe said he will immediately begin a search for a new Police Chief and that applications will be accepted soon from internal and external sources.

Howe also announced the resignation of Lt. Tim Smith, which is effective Tuesday. Howe stated in the press release that "he was confident that the Department would be moving forward in a positive direction."

When asked if Goff's decision to retire was in relation to the investigation surrounding councilman Sam "Zeke" Lopez, Howe said, "I would have no way of knowing that."  The U.S. Attorney's Office scheduled a press conference for 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Federal building to discuss the Clarksburg Police Department.  City officials said they don't know what the conference is about.

U.S. Attorney William J. Ihlenfeld, II, said in a press conference Tuesday that the resignation of Clarksburg Police Chief Marshall Goff and Lt. Tim Smith came as a way to avoid federal charges, stemming from the investigation and charges facing Clarksburg Councilman Sam "Zeke" Lopez.

Goff became the interim Chief in June 2007 after 23 years with the department.  He was sworn in to the full time position in August 2007.  He also worked for the Anmoore Police Department for five years prior to that.
