White Hall Mayor: Town Has Lost Almost $1 Million in Last 10 Years

Posted: Updated:

On Monday at White Hall Town Council, Mayor Guy Ward said the town of White Hall has lost almost $1 million in the past ten years from the alcohol beverage tax ordinance passed in 2003.

Mayor Ward said he looked into the tax receipts and found them to be low. Mayor Ward said he spoke with Wal-Mart and determined that White Hall has lost more than $70,000 dollars a year in alcohol beverage taxes from that store alone.

Mayor Ward also said it could have been an oversight on the state's part because White Hall addresses use Fairmont on their physical address. He said he has contacted the state tax department and believes that it thinks there is a problem as well.

"The 2003 ordinance was intended to get that sales tax off the sale of liquor and that five percent hidden sales tax was supposed to come back to White Hall. No one ever followed up on that and so very little of that money got to us," said Ward.

Mayor Ward said the state tax department will help White Hall file a complaint and resolve the issue. He hopes to have the issue resolved by the end of September.
