Gov. Tomblin requests federal government’s assistance for 6 WV counties

Posted: Updated:

Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin is requesting the federal government's help for ongoing recovery efforts, following storms in central West Virginia, his office recently announced.

The storms moved through the area between June 12-20, resulting in flooding, landslides and mudslides.

If the desired declaration is granted, it would provide help to people, businesses and government agencies in Roane County.

Approval of public assistance also would help local government agencies in Doddridge, Gilmer, Harrison, Lewis and Mason counties, according to a news release from the governor's office.

"The storms were particularly destructive in the city of Spencer," Tomblin said in the release. "Drainage systems were overwhelmed; floodwaters reached beyond the 100-year flood plain and, as a result, vital resources received significant flood damage. In nearby Mason County, local farmers, buses, mail delivery and local residents were affected by the closure of a highly traveled bridge which was damaged during the flooding."
