Remember The Brave Festival Supports Mountaineer Military Museum

The sun shined from behind a few clouds on Saturday for the Remember the Brave Festival in Jane Lew. The festival was started when organizer Laura Winans approached a friend with the idea of holding a craft show. But she wasn't sure what to put the money towards, until inspiration struck.

"And then when she did it was just like, what are we going to do it for? And we talked about different things, and then something that was dear to my heart was veterans and the military. So we agreed on that and that's how we started it," said Winan's friend and co-organizer Gigi Richards.

And the response from the community has been clear. More than 50 vendors registered for the event, bringing out plenty of people to show off their work, and do some shopping as well. The Festival also raffled off prizes for attendees. All the funds will go to the museum to help with its upgrades and renovations, something Richards said is more important now than it ever has been.

"And you know, nowadays in school, you don't learn a bunch about the military and the wars and stuff like this. Here you can, you can go there and actually see it and learn it, and so it's hands on," said Richards.

Museum owner Barb McVaney said they have plenty of ways to put the extra funds to good use, but said regardless of how much they make from the event, the support from the community is what matters most to her.

"It keeps us going, and helps us to continue our efforts to honor our veterans and keep those memories and these pieces of history so everyone can enjoy them," said McVaney.
