Harrison County Church Hosts Bike Weekend

Posted: Updated:

The Jewel City Church hosted its 13th Annual Bike Weekend, a project that started with the pastor himself.

"Our pastor's a motorcycle enthusiast, it's a passion of his, something that he always enjoyed doing, and we're always looking for ways to reach out and touch people's lives in any way that we can, and this was just an idea that came across his mind to have a motorcycle Sunday," said youth pastor Erik Hustead.

More than 100  bikes and hundreds more people came to Sunday's service, which featured bikes on the stage, and fog machines and moving lights to excite the crowd. While the church is happy to reach out to a broader community on these weekends, some of the bikers who attend say it's great to be around so many like-minded people.

"It's just the feeling of the camaraderie that we have when we all get together and we're able to worship the Lord as one great big group like this. It's really special for me to come over here once a year to do this," said biker Vernon Poling, who's been coming to the event for years.

It may not be a traditional service, but Hustead said that's it's not too far from the way they worship each day. He said they understand there's a broad range of people in the world, and he's happy to keep their doors open to anyone at any time.

"There's a lot of lost people out there and they come in all shapes, sizes and forms, and God loves everybody, so we just share that love and compassion with the rest of the world. We just try to be pretty consistent every day of the week," Hustead said.
