Preston County Workshop Prepares for Day at Kingwood Farmers Market

Posted: Updated:

The Preston County Workshop will have a treat for the public this Saturday.

The workshop is a non-profit organization that hires people with disabilities.

This year, the workers grew sweet onions for the first time, to sell at the Kingwood Farmers Market.

Organizers said the experience helped them learn a new skill.

"They've worked in them, pulling the weeds, they've watered them, and taken care of them. Same way with the mums. They helped us get the mums started. It teaches them a skill that if they would not be here, they might not get. We also gave them some produce to take home, to grow themselves, so they can be more self sufficient," said John Hyre, of the Preston County Workshop.

The onions will be available at the Kingwood Farmers Market on Saturday, July 20.

The workers are also growing mums, to sell in August.
