Lewis County Commission Awards Grants to 2 Local Groups

Posted: Updated:

The Lewis County Commission has awarded grants to two local groups.

The first grant went to the annual Stonewall Jackson Triathlon.

It's the only event in the state that can qualify participants to compete on a national level.

It's also open to teams with one person completing each leg of the race.

Organizers said the money raised will go back into the county.

"Any proceeds from the race will go to the Lewis County Chamber of Commerce, which is in turn rolled back into the community to help support the business community in our area," said Sherry Lambert, of the Chamber of Commerce.

The commission also awarded a grant to the West Virginia Jazz Society.

The group is planning another summer stroll through Weston with jazz music at four restaurants in the city.

The money also will bring that music to local kids and seniors. Organizers said those are two audiences they want to reach out to.

"Both those groups of people, young people and seniors, benefit a lot from music, it turns out. We got a tremendous reaction, positive reaction from them, which motivates us, but without the support from the county commission, we couldn't have done it," said Eric Spelsberg, of the WV Jazz Society.

The Weston Summer Stroll is scheduled for August 23 just before the start of football season.
