WV Department of Agriculture Holding Food Prep Classes

Posted: Updated:

The West Virginia Department of Agriculture is holding classes to help food producers protect consumers from food borne illnesses.

The program helps farmers and extension service agents improve the safety of fresh food and vegetables by preventing organisms from contaminating them.

"Largely the way food safety is controlled in that environment then is the farmer putting in these practices that prevent these bad micro organisms like E.Coli, salmonella from getting on to the fresh produce item," said Dr. Robert Williams, a Virginia Tech Food Scientist.

The Department of Agriculture will hold another class Thursday at the State Fair of West Virginia Fairgrounds.

The program is funded through the USDA's Specialty Crop Block Grant Program.
