Summer Reading and Nutrition Program Helps Local Students

Posted: Updated:

A summer reading and nutrition program is helping more than 3,000 kids in the state, and more than 100 in Harrison County.

Energy Express gives students one-on-one reading assignments and helps them get more out of reading with interactive and artistic activities.

The program also feeds kids twice a day for six weeks.

"Often times children of low income households suffer from the suffer slide. Due to lack of enrichment resources, they can lose up to three months of reading ability. Over the course of their career it can set them back by the time they reach high school by two years," said Kelvin Thomas, an Americorps service member.

Energy Express is a partnership through Americorps and the WVU extension service.
