Star City Hosts American Red Cross Blood Drive

Posted: Updated:

A blood drive in Star City is helping the American Red Cross during a time of need.

The Battle of the Banks challenges local financial institutions to go against each other, to see which one can recruit the most blood donors.

The American Red Cross said it's always in need of donors in the summer time.

"We have a higher demand, summertime activities, more people are on motor cycles, more people are out boating, and our collections are lower. We have more people on vacation, traveling, and the schools are out," said Jack Lake, of the Red Cross.

According to West Virginia state law, you must be 17 years or older to donate blood, or have parental permission if you are 16 years old.

Additional requirements to give blood, according to the American Red Cross, include being healthy and weighing at least 110 pounds.

If you are unsure whether you are eligible to be a donor, each potential donor's health history is discussed as part of the donation process before any blood is collected.

According to the Red Cross, each donor receives a brief examination during which temperature, pulse, blood pressure and hemoglobin are measured.

The blood drive will continue until 7 p.m. Wednesday evening at Saint Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Star City.
