PHILIPPI -

Emergency crews responded to a reported drowning Wednesday afternoon at the city pool in Philippi.

The authorities later confirmed that HealthNet had flown a child to Ruby Memorial Hospital as a precaution.

A Virginia teen who was in town visiting his family said he ended up saving the boy that almost drowned.

Justin Travis, 14, is in Philippi for a few weeks visiting his father. He said something unexpected happened while he was swimming in the Philippi City Pool.

"I was over in the five foot, just swimming around, going under water, trying to touch the bottom. I saw a little kid, it looked like he was trying to hold his breath, he had his fists up, head down, and it looked like he was in a squatting position," said Justin.

Something about the situation made Travis decide to check on the child.

"I gave him the thumbs up to come up, or, 'Are you alright?', and he gave no response. I went up and got a breath of air. I picked him up by his stomach, and brought him to the surface," said Justin.

Justin said he swam to the wall, where the lifeguards took over.

His father, Mike, said he couldn't be prouder of his son.

"I'm just tickled. It's hard to say, but I couldn't be prouder of my only child. He's a good kid, a very good young man, and always looking out for people," said Mike.

And his grandmother said the feelings she had when hearing the news are indescribable.

"I don't know, the feelings going through me were just kind of crazy at the time. I just wanted to get my hands on him and hug him. He saved a life, you don't do that everyday," said Sylvia Shaw, Justin's grandmother.

At this time, the name or condition of the child who went to the hospital is not being released.
