Literacy Volunteers of Marion County to Hold Annual Run to Read Races

The Literacy Volunteers of Marion County will hold the 15th annual "Run to Read" 5K and 10K races in Fairmont Friday.

Literacy Volunteers tutors adults and children in reading, math, and English as a second language all for free.

Packet pickup and registration will be held at 5:30 p.m. The 10K will have a start time of 6:30 Friday evening. Starting at 6:45 p.m., there will be a 1600 meter track run. The 5K will have a start time of 7:30 p.m.

Both races will start at East-West Stadium in Fairmont. The 10K race is projected to start on Minor Avenue. The 5K race is projected to start near the corner of Virginia Avenue and 14th Street.

Registration will be $25 for one race or $30 for both races. Race fees also include a T-shirt.

In addition, runners and walkers and their family members will have access to the 12th Street pool beginning at 7 p.m., courtesy of Marion County Parks and Recreation. Hot dogs, fruits, vegetables, chips, cookies, water and sports drinks will be provided after the races.

100 runners from five states have pre-registered for the race and more are expected to sign up on Friday.

All proceeds will benefit Literacy Volunteers of Marion County.
