"Winning the state championship last year was huge for them. Then we went back to the state tournament this year and you know how it is when you're the defending state champion. Everybody is coming for you," Bridgeport 10 and 11-year-old All-Stars Head Coach Wayne Goodwin said.
Not many little league teams can relate to the 10 and 11-year-old Bridgeport All-Stars. Winning has been a staple with these youngsters, and the journey was elevated with one simple swing of the bat last weekend.
"I was really excited to get the hit," Bridgeport 12-year-old catcher Benjamin Mossburg said. "When I walked up, I thought I was going to send the people home crying in either two ways, happy or sad. So it was really good to get that hit and beat Martinsburg."
"I was the game-tying run. So running home and the guy running behind me was right behind me and when he slid home we all just started crying and jumping and running. We were just hugging each other," Bridgeport 12-year-old pitcher A.J. Goodwin said.
Benjamin Mossburg's game winning hit lifted Bridgeport over Martinsburg for the state championship. But now they head out to Regionals in North Carolina, where there's a lot more on the line.
"These kids will be ready for it. Like I said, they experienced it last year, they've won two state tournaments now. They've got a lot of experience, we've got a lot of good pitching, we play a lot of good defense and we hit enough," Wayne Goodwin said.
