Blaine Stewart Carries On Legacy In Final OVAC All-Star Football Game

Posted: Updated:
BETHANY -

The OVAC All-Star Football Game is the one event that signals the start of football season.

Among the several storylines heading into Sunday's game, none may be more intriguing than Blaine Stewart's.

The son of former WVU Head Football Coach, Bill Stewart, Blaine has learned to march forward in life, all while keeping his father's legacy close to his heart.

Not a day goes by that Blaine Stewart doesn't think of his dad, especially as he gets ready for the OVAC All-Star football Game.

"I think he'd be proud," Blaine Stewart said, speaking of his father Bill. "This is a good experience. He always talked about how great the OVAC game is and I'm just privileged to play in it."

"Me having the opportunity to coach his son is an honor to me because I had a great amount of respect for coach Stewart and his son is a quality young man," West Virginia Head Coach Mike Young said.

Bill Stewart was the loveable, easily likeable coach of the West Virginia Mountaineers, who was born and raised in New Martinsville. He left a lasting mark in Mountaineer history with his legendary "leave no doubt speech" as interim head coach before winning the Fiesta Bowl over Oklahoma in January 2008.

Stewart was carried off the field after one of the biggest wins in school history and was hired as "head" coach the next day, and right there was young Blaine, basking in the moment with his dad in the post-game press conference, sporting the Steve Slaton jersey.

"This 7th grader besides me," Bill Stewart said during the 2008 press conference, "he has five more years of high school and then five more years of college, because I'm going to redshirt him. His mother doesn't know that yet."

Stewart died May 21, 2012, a little over a year ago. Blaine is still hurting, but moving on.

"My mom and I have had great support," Blaine Stewart said. "Time heals and I'm doing the best to move forward with my life."

That includes continuing his football career at James Madison University.

"Being around the game at such a close level, a lot of kids don't have that opportunity, and I think that's really helped me in my career," he said.

Growing up as a coach's son in Morgantown, has certainly helped shape Blaine's life too.

"People saw him as coach Stewart. I just saw him as my dad. It was great to see him on the sidelines and come home after games and talk about life and football. It was a blessing. I loved every minute of it," he said.

"People say I look and act like him. I guess that's the best compliment I can get," he said with a smile.
