Monongalia County Health Department Highlighting Importance of Immunizations

Posted: Updated:

August is National Immunization Awareness Month and the Monongalia County Health Department wants to highlight the importance of immunizations.

It has divided August into four parts each for a different immunization population.

The first part, August 1 through 8, will focus on back-to-school shots for children up to 18.

The second part is called "Off to College" and will focus on shots for young adults ages 19 to 26. It will be held August 9 through August 16.

"Not Just for Kids" will be held August 17 to August 24, and will focus on shots for adults ages 26 and over.

The final part, "A Healthy Start", will focus on shots for babies from birth to age 2, as well as pregnant women. It will be held August 25 through August 31.

The Monongalia County Health Department said while immunizations have significantly reduced the incidence of serious infectious diseases, vaccination rates for some diseases are not meeting national public health goals. That is why it is so important to highlight the fact that immunizations are needed.

The Health Department also said everyone needs to be reminded that immunizations are not just for children. People need to have immunizations through out their entire lifetime.
