The 24th Appalachian String Band Music Festival will welcome Lester McCumbers, a Vandalia Award winner, to present a masters workshop.

McCumbers, a Nicut resident, will teach the class from 2-3 p.m. Aug. 1. The festival runs from July 31-Aug. 4 at Camp Washington-Carver in Clifftop.

McCumbers is a master fiddler. He was born in 1921 in Calhoun County. He has performed for more than 60 years on radio and stage shows throughout West Virginia and beyond. He was given the Vandalia Award, which recognizes achievement in the performance, creation or perpetuation of West Virginia traditional arts, in 2005.

Musicians Paul Brown and Alan Jabbour also will join McCumbers in teaching the masters workshops at the festival.

The Appalachian String Band Music Festival is a five-day camping experience that includes music contests, dancing, arts and crafts and games for all ages. It brings in thousands of string band musicians and fans from around the world each year, according to the West Virginia Division of Culture and History.
