Federal funds have been awarded by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, or SAMHSA, for West Virginia.

The money was awarded to The Healing Place in Huntington to expand its substance abuse residential recovery services as well as to help establish a region-wide training program for peer mentoring.

Sens. Jay Rockefeller and Joe Manchin, along with Rep. Nick Rahall, all D-W.Va., announced the funding July 31.

The Healing Place is a nonprofit, peer-to-peer recovering community organization. It will receive a $250,000 Mental Health and Substance Abuse Service Grant from the SAMHSA Center for Substance Abuse Treatment to expand its residential recovery services to be able to care for 271 people.

The expansion will increase the state's capacity for substance abuse recovery service residential beds by 54, and also provide a total of 100 available beds by the second year. The Healing Place also will provide Peer Mentor Specialist Training to 25 men and 25 women who will collaborate with other residential treatment programs in the state and will be employed to provide recovery support services to people who leave other treatment programs.

"The Healing Place is helping to find solutions to assist individuals, families and whole communities fight back against drug and alcohol addiction, and I am pleased to have supported this funding," Rahall said in a news release.

Rahall is co-chairman of the Congressional Prescription Drug Abuse Caucus.

Rockefeller said community organizations such as The Healting Place give people who are struggling with addiction a way to "chart a path beyond addiction."

"I will continue pushing for this important program until we've found a way to completely solve the prescription drug abuse problem in West Virginia," Rockefeller said in a news release.

And Manchin said he was glad The Healing Place would receive the funds.

"For those who are severely struggling to overcome addiction, it is important to provide mental health services necessary to make a full recovery so that they can get back on their feet and live long, healthy lives with their families," Manchin said in a news release.
