32nd Annual International Conference on Ground Control in Mining Held at Lakeview Resort

Posted: Updated:

Ground control is one of the major causes of deaths and injuries in coal and underground mines. The goal of the 32nd Annual Conference on Ground Control is to help make those deaths and injuries decrease.

The three day event at the Lakeview Resort covers a variety of ground control topics.

It attracts experts from across the country to discuss new ways to keep mines safe, including how to design pillar systems to make sure that the mines are stable.

"We try to develop new, engineering design tools to help the mines be able to plan the mine," said Tom Barczak, the executive director of the International Conference on Ground Control, "And achieve stable and successful mine openings so they can mine without any danger to the mine workers."

Hundreds of formal peer-reviewed papers are presented and discussed throughout the conference. The papers are presented by the authors in an open forum designed for discussion and debate.

The conference also awards a $5,000 scholarship to a student studying ground control. This year, a student in China received the scholarship.

The main goal of the conference is to create a forum to promote closer communication among researchers, consultants, regulators, manufacturers, and mine operators to expedite solutions to ground control problems in mining.
