HUNTINGTON – Hot dog lovers have one less spot where they can pick up their favorite taste treat, but sufferers of minor ailments or injuries soon will have a new place where they can seek relief.

MedExpress, a fast-growing health care chain based in Morgantown, has announced that it plans to open a new walk-in urgent care facility at the corner of Adams Avenue and 1st Street, in a building that previously housed a Stewarts Original Hot Dog location. An opening date for the new walk-in clinic is yet to be set, a company spokesman said.

Stewarts President John Mandt Jr. said he had no plans to sell the company's property at 10 Adams Ave., but he received a purchase offer that was too good to refuse. Mandt said the hot dog chain will continue to operate its three other locations – in Huntington, Kenova and Ashland – along with its online business and its catering operation.

He said the five workers employed at the 1st Street location have been transferred to the Stewarts at 2445 5th Ave., where the iconic hot dog business got its start in 1932. Stewarts had operated the 1st Street location for 34 years, since 1979.

Founded by a group of emergency room physicians in Morgantown in 2001, MedExpress now has full-service urgent care facilities in five states – Florida, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia, where it operates in a dozen communities. Information posted on the company's website indicates its facilities are open 12 hours a day, seven days a week and "always have a physician on site." No appointments are required.

MedExpress already operates a Huntington location on U.S. 60 East and just opened a new facility in Teays Valley. In addition to announcing the new West Huntington location, it's also announced it plans to open a new location in Martinsburg.
