COALTON -

The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Rural Development has approved a grant for the Coalton Volunteer Fire Department in Randolph County.

The grant totals more than $23,000, and the funds will be used to assist with the purchase of a personnel carrier.

The four-by-four truck will transport six fire fighters and can be used to haul brush fire equipment and can enter into rough terrain where large fire trucks are unable to respond to.

Thursday's announcement is one part of the Department's efforts to strengthen the rural economy.

"You know its going to help especially in the winter months to respond to emergency calls and since we're a rural community to begin with we can also put stuff back in the truck if we need any other equipment for any other emergency call," said Chief Ernie George, of the Coalton VFD.

George said the truck will arrive in about eight weeks.

The Coalton Volunteer Fire Department will hold a gun bash on Aug 24 at the new Randolph County National Guard Armory off Route 33. It will be from noon to 6 p.m.

There will be free food and refreshments to those that buy a ticket.

On Sunday August 11, the department will sell tickets for the final time starting from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the fire house.
