Skyview Elementary Prepares New Students for School

Posted: Updated:

New student orientation at Skyview Elementary School in Monongalia County brought a dozen students and their parents to the school a week before the first bell will ring.

"We want to make sure that they know what to expect, where we are, and where everything is and have some familiar faces on that first day," said counselor Holly Nicholson.

Families filed into the cafeteria, past the stacks of forms, pamphlets, and other papers students will carry home on their first day.

"This year we've enrolled over 20 new students at Skyview so far," said new principal Jennifer Cox, "and more are happening every day."

The families aren't guided on their tour by the staff or teachers, but older students.

"I have our fifth grade star students giving them tours so they can kind of help them and mentor them and show them around through their perspective."

Some highlights of the tour include the art and music rooms, playground, and computer labs.

"I think there's a lot of nervous tension when there's a move into a new home or a new school," Nicholson said, "and a lot of these students are coming from out of state or other schools in our county and our state and it can be really upsetting to go to a whole new place and not know what to expect."

Some of those fears are calmed after students spent an hour exploring the school with some of their new classmates. Nicholson said she also checks up on the new kids after school starts, to make sure they're transitioning well.

Classes resume in Monongalia County on August 15.
