Barrackville Celebrates Annual Community Day

Posted: Updated:

Officials and members of a Marion County community came together on Saturday, August 10 to celebrate its rich history and plans for the future.

On Saturday, the Barrackville Volunteer Fire Department hosted its 89th annual Community Appreciation Day. Barrackville Mayor Roy Meeks was in attendance, as were Barrackville council members and emergency personnel.

Chief Michael Bland of the Barrackville Volunteer Fire Department said a surprise delivery made the day all the more special. It was an advertisement from the very first Community Appreciation Day in Barrackville.

"The date on it was September 11, 1924. We didn't know it was coming, we didn't know it was in existence. We're hanging it on our wall. Maybe next year we can borrow it again," said Bland.

Bland pointed out on the advertisement that in 1924, the prize for having the youngest baby at the event was a sack of flour.

The fire department started up the grill at 1 p.m. and continued to show its appreciation for the community with a cookout. The fire department also gave community members the opportunity to check tour the facility, and check out all of its equipment. This included the very first Barrackville Volunteer Fire Department engine.
