Kevin Gregory Kevin Gregory

Update:

U.S. Marshals apprehended Kevin Gregory around 6 p.m. Wednesday.

They said Gregory was located at a residence on Hawkins Road, off Old Route 33, near Buckhannon, Upshur County.

U.S. Marshals discovered that Gregory made his way from Marion County to Lewis County during the morning hours of August 14, where he then received a ride to the residence where he was arrested,  according to a press release from the U.S. Marshals.

Deputy Alex Neville of the U.S. Marshals said Gregory was arrested following a 1/4 mile foot pursuit through a wooded area.

Gregory was originally arrested on June 19, 2013 in Fairmont by the U.S. Marshals Service's Mountain State Fugitive Task Force and the Fairmont Police Department. U.S. Marshals from the Clarksburg office were investigating Gregory as an unregistered sex offender and a fugitive from the state of Virginia, according to the press release.

During the June arrest, Gregory also attempted to flee from officers on foot but was quickly apprehended, according to the press release.

U.S. Marshals said Gregory was taken into custody on the escape warrant. He is currently in the Tygart Valley Regional Jail.

Original Story:

The Marion County Sheriff's Department is searching for a man that posed as another man to escape from jail Tuesday morning.

Officials said Kevin Gregory swapped clothing with Bruce Clayton, who had a scheduled court appearance that day. Officials said Gregory also signed Clayton's name upon leaving. Clayton was expected to be released on home confinement.

Officials said they believe Clayton did assist in the switch.

Gregory was taken to the Marion County Courthouse as Clayton, went to his courthouse appearance, and was granted home confinement.

Officials said he was supposed to go to the Daily Reports Center in the courthouse, but left.

Once officials realized he never went, they called the North Central Regional Jail and realized there was a mix-up.

Gregory was in the North Central Regional Jail after being arrested for failing to register as a sex offender in Virginia and is considered a fugitive.

He was last seen wearing blue jeans and a blue T-shirt with writing on it. Officials said he is wearing a camo hat and dark boots.

He is 5 feet 11 inches tall and weighs about 225 pounds. He is clean-shaven and has dark hair.

Officials believe he is somewhere in Marion County and said additional charges will be pressed.

If you have any information on Gregory's whereabouts, you're asked to contact the Marion County Sheriff's Department at 304-367-5300.

An internal review has begun at North Central Regional Jail to discover what went wrong and what measures need to be taken to prevent it from ever happening again.
