The Randolph County Development Authority has hired a firm to design a plan to connect the Elkins Depot to the Allegheny Highlands Trail. The Highlands Trail Foundation was organized in 1995.

The project would link a bike trail from Elkins to Parsons. This last stretch will add about a mile to the 25 mile long trail.

The development authority said it's looking at the safest, most scenic route possible.

It said it expects the project to boost tourism and accessibility.

"They start or end either way in the downtown area. It makes it more accessible for shopping, restaurants, and tourist attractions and again it provides that safe element and convenience so they can start in the downtown area," said Robbie Morris, of the Randolph County Development Authority.

A transportation enhancement grant is funding the project, which should start next spring.
