Marion County Transit Authority Seeing Progress In Transfer Station Construction

FAIRMONT -

The Marion County Transit Authority has been working over the past year to renovate 401 Monroe Street in Fairmont.

It used to be an apartment building, but was purchased by the Transit Authority several years ago for additional public transportation.

Marion County Transit Authority General Manager George Levitsky said the first floor will be used as a transfer station.

The new location will allow people to be inside during extreme weather conditions while waiting for a bus.

The current transfer station at the courthouse is on a slope and is outside.

The Monroe Street location is flatter, which will make it easier for buses to pick up people who need assistance.

Levitsky said there is a lot of work that goes into renovating the building.

"We're redoing the entrance area to it, sidewalks, some parking in the area," he said.

It will also have a unique look that will remind people of the past.

"We're redoing the surface of the building and trying to make it more like it was on the 20's," Levitsky said.

Levitsky said weather caused several delays in the project, but he hopes to have the new transfer station up and running by the beginning of next year.
