Restaurant Road Trip: Sam's Pizza

TENNERTON -

It's time for another stop on the Restaurant Road Trip. You know by now I absolutely love pizza. I've brought you PeppeBroni's, Big Kahuna's, Pies and Pints  and I think I found another great gem, it's call Sam's Pizza and it's just outside Buckhannon.

"Its just kind of a fun, hometown atmosphere, you see a lot of people here you can talk to," said patron Robert Osburn. "The staff is always friendly. They're always excited to serve, and make sure you get good customer service."

It's been more than 20 years since Sam's Pizza opened up along Route 20.

With $2,500 in his pocket Owner Sam Nolte started the shop when he was just 18 years old.

With a little of this, and a little of that, slowly over time Nolte developed the Pizza his shop is known for.

"I made it up with trial and error when I first got into business, and just stuck with it since and never changed it..." he said, "The first couple of years, I was pretty young so I had my ups and downs, but it's been good."

The now perfected Pizza has quite an adventure of its own. One that starts at 2 a.m. every morning when workers come in and make the day's worth of pizza dough, slice meat toppings and grate cheese. The hard work while you sleep, pays-off out when it pops out of the oven.

"It seems like the pizza tastes so much better, so much fresher than other places," Osburn said, "A lot of chain restaurants it seems like a stale taste. At Sam's it's so much fresher."

Sam's is known for great food and value. It's all you can eat pizza buffet and salad bar only costs $5.49. And Sam's will even put custom pizza on the buffet upon request.

As for the salad, it's homemade dressings have become very popular with customers.

"Once we started doing it, customers started to notice, and when customers notice then you stick with it," Nolte said. "Our ranch dressing is becoming very popular, people come in an buy it by the gallon."

Nolte's hard work has equaled success. In 20 years, Sam's Pizza has gone from a teenager's dream, to Upshur County staple.

"A lot of our customers were kids when they first started coming here, now they're bringing their children. We just always try to give back, we try to do sponsorships as much as we can. My philosophy is always been if you give back to the community, they will always try to patronize you," Nolte said.

Sam's Pizza is located on Route 20, across from Southfork Shopping Center in Tennerton.  It's open Monday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m.; Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 10:30 p.m.; and Sunday from noon to 8:30 p.m.
