A resident nurse from Visiting Homemaker Service in Star City has won a national award.

Carolyn Morris Walters, the RN Supervisor at the Visiting Homemaker Service, is the 2013 Outstanding Nurse from West Virginia.

The National Association for Home Care and Hospice gives the award to one nurse from each state each year.

Walters said her next stop will be Washington, D.C. in December.

"I get to go to Washington, all expenses paid. Where I'll receive my nomination award, I guess if you will, there. They've already chosen the top ten, which I'm not in. But still, I get to represent West Virginia regardless," Walters said.

Walters has been a nurse for over 25 years and started her career at the Visiting Homemaker Service. She then went on to become a school nurse, worked in a hospital, and worked as a caregiver.

"Well, to represent the state of West Virginia, I mean I'm a West Virginian, born and bread, and died in the wool type person and it's an honor. I lived in Michigan for eight years but we had to come back," she said.

Walters said the most exciting thing about being a nurse is that she never stops learning.
